Fire Technology 101(Saturday)
Fire Technology 101 is set at a nationally recognized fire training facility and is taught by experienced firefighters. Completion of this program begins the course sequence requirements for admittance into the Rio Hondo Fire Training Center. Included in the course is an introduction to the philosophy and history of the fire service. The function of public and private fire protection services, the laws and regulations affecting fire service and the role of fire departments as part of a local government will be explored. Basic fire chemistry, fire protection systems, firefighting strategies, and possible career opportunities in fire related fields will also be addressed. Students will experience hands on activities with fire protection equipment, ropes and knots, ladder and hose evolutions and fire service tools and extinguishers. The program will conclude with a formal graduation.
Students will earn high school credits and will enroll at Rio Hondo College and receive 3 college units.
Integrated throughout the course are standards for Career Ready Practice and Academic Content Standards which include: appropriate technical skills and academic knowledge; communication skills; career planning; applied technology; critical thinking and problem solving; personal health and financial literacy; citizenship, integrity, ethical leadership and effective management; work productively while integrating cultural and global competence; creativity and innovation; reliable research strategies, and environment, social and economic impacts of decisions.
