Chef Luna explained that the students were learning to work in small groups, follow directions and most importantly, learn about how to manage their time effectively. He informed us that this is the one time they will be using box recipes for the cake and frosting and were able to utilize the pantry with items such as graham crackers, oreos, pretzels and fondant to create their masterpieces.
Prior to beginning the cupcake challenge, students were required to sketch a design of their idea AND write a short paragraph describing their concept. The concepts could be in the form of what their inspiration was or a scary story behind their creations.
Chef Luna allowed judges to read the concepts of each one of the six teams and ask any questions while they were furiously working to complete the project in their allotted time. Judges voted for their top three, first basing their picks visually, then a final tasting round to determine the all-around winner.
In the end, Team #6 came out victorious for their cute, yet spooky, witch being crushed under a cauldron. The cake was moist as this team went with Chef Luna’s suggestion to use pudding in their batter. The judges were also wowed by the colorful and creative use of fondant.
